Bilder Pieter Schut (1618–1660) – Daniel's Vision of the Four Beasts – woodcut (1659)
Beskrivning
"Daniels gesighte vande vier Dieren als voorteekenen der vier Monarchien" depicts the biblical vision from the Book of Daniel, showing the prophet reclining in a canopy bed on the left. Through an architectural opening, the four great beasts—a lion with eagle's wings, a bear, a leopard with four wings and four heads, and a terrifying ten-horned beast—emerge from a stormy sea. This woodcut was published in Amsterdam as part of the Toneel der rarieteiten, a series illustrating notable biblical events. The work is a representative example of Dutch Golden Age graphic art, characterized by its fine linework and dramatic narrative composition.
Pieter Schut was a Dutch Golden Age engraver and etcher active in Amsterdam during the mid-seventeenth century. He was a prolific creator of biblical illustrations, topographical views, and historical scenes, often working for prominent publishers such as Claes Janszoon Visscher. Schut is particularly noted for his skill in condensing complex narratives into small-scale prints that remained accessible to a wide public audience. His contribution to the visual culture of the Netherlands helped to standardize the iconography of many scriptural stories during a period of intense religious and artistic development.
