"Amos. Zacharias. Malachias." depicts three of the minor prophets from the Old Testament in a dramatic, open-air setting. On the left, Amos is shown with a shepherd's crook and several sheep, signifying his origin as a herdsman; in the center, Zacharias is captured in a gestural pose with his back partially to the viewer, standing before a domed temple structure; on the right, Malachias is shown standing with arms crossed in a contemplative manner alongside a small winged child or angel. This woodcut was published in Amsterdam as part of the Toneel der rarieteiten, a series illustrating notable biblical figures and events. The work is a representative example of Dutch Golden Age graphic art, characterized by its fine linework and the use of symbolic attributes to identify scriptural characters.

Pieter Schut was a Dutch Golden Age engraver and etcher active in Amsterdam during the mid-seventeenth century. He was a prolific creator of biblical illustrations, topographical views, and historical scenes, often working for prominent publishers such as Claes Janszoon Visscher. Schut is particularly noted for his skill in condensing complex narratives into small-scale prints that remained accessible to a wide public audience. His contribution to the visual culture of the Netherlands helped to standardize the iconography of many scriptural stories during a period of intense religious and artistic development.
