Beskrivning
"Italie et Turquie d’Europe" depicts the geographical regions of the Italian peninsula and the Balkan territories of the Ottoman Empire. The composition includes detailed political boundaries, major cities, and topographical features such as mountain ranges and river systems across the Mediterranean and Adriatic seas. In the lower center, a decorative cartouche is styled as a classical column draped with a laurel wreath, while the lower left features several distance scales. This engraving was published in Paris by Francois Buisson as part of the Atlas Complet du Precis de la Geographie Universelle. The work serves as an important cartographic record of the geopolitical landscape of Southern Europe during the early nineteenth century.
Conrad Malte-Brun was a Danish-born geographer and political writer who became a leading figure in French cartography after being exiled from his homeland. He is best known for founding the Societe de Geographie in Paris and for his monumental multi-volume work, Precis de la Geographie Universelle, which aimed to synthesize all geographical knowledge of his time. Malte-Brun's approach combined scientific rigor with historical context, making his atlases essential references for both scholars and the general public. His contributions helped establish geography as a modern academic discipline and influenced the development of the field throughout the nineteenth century.
