Beskrivning

"Systèmes Géographiques de Ptolémée, de Strabon et d’Ératosthène" depicts a comparative study of the world as understood by ancient geographers. The primary, large map illustrates the Ptolemaic system, showing the known world from Europe and Africa to Southeast Asia within a curved projection. Below this, two smaller inset maps compare the geographical worldviews of Strabo and Eratosthenes, highlighting the historical evolution of cartographic knowledge. This engraving was published in Paris by Francois Buisson as part of the Atlas Complet du Precis de la Geographie Universelle. The work is a significant pedagogical tool from the early nineteenth century, reflecting the era's dedication to reconciling classical scholarship with modern scientific geography.

Conrad Malte-Brun was a Danish-born geographer and political writer who became a leading figure in French cartography after being exiled from his homeland. He is best known for founding the Societe de Geographie in Paris and for his monumental multi-volume work, Precis de la Geographie Universelle, which aimed to synthesize all geographical knowledge of his time. Malte-Brun's approach combined scientific rigor with historical context, making his atlases essential references for both scholars and the general public. His contributions helped establish geography as a modern academic discipline and influenced the development of the field throughout the nineteenth century.
