Beskrivning

"Siberie avec l’Amerique Russe" depicts the vast northern territories of the Russian Empire, stretching from the Ural Mountains in the west across Siberia to the Kamchatka Peninsula and Alaska (Russian America) in the east. The composition utilizes a polar projection to show the proximity of the two continents across the Bering Strait, featuring detailed coastlines, river systems, and regional names. In the lower right corner, a decorative title cartouche is set against a rocky, icy landscape, while the upper center features a compass rose centered on the North Pole. This engraving was published in Paris by Francois Buisson as part of the Atlas Complet du Precis de la Geographie Universelle. The work is a significant cartographic record of early nineteenth-century geographical knowledge regarding the Russian Far East and the North Pacific.

Conrad Malte-Brun was a Danish-born geographer and political writer who became a leading figure in French cartography after being exiled from his homeland. He is best known for founding the Societe de Geographie in Paris and for his monumental multi-volume work, Precis de la Geographie Universelle, which aimed to synthesize all geographical knowledge of his time. Malte-Brun's approach combined scientific rigor with historical context, making his atlases essential references for both scholars and the general public. His contributions helped establish geography as a modern academic discipline and influenced the development of the field throughout the nineteenth century.
