Beskrivning

"L’Europe après le démembrement de l'Empire de Charlemagne" depicts the political divisions of the European continent as they existed from the ninth to the eleventh centuries. The composition outlines the fragmented territories following the Carolingian era, showing the various kingdoms and tribal regions across Western and Eastern Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. Administrative borders are meticulously highlighted with hand-applied red, yellow, and green outlines to distinguish between the different sovereign powers of the Middle Ages. This engraving was published in Paris as part of the Atlas de la Geographie par Delamarche, serving as a significant historical and pedagogical tool for studying medieval geopolitical transformations.

Felix Delamarche was a French geographer and engineer who continued the prolific cartographic legacy of his father, Charles-Francois Delamarche. He was a central figure in the nineteenth-century Parisian map-making industry, specializing in the production of updated world atlases and terrestrial globes for educational use. Delamarche’s work is characterized by the integration of historical data with contemporary geographical standards, providing a comprehensive view of the world’s physical and political evolution. His publications remained highly influential throughout Europe, setting a high bar for clarity and technical precision in commercial cartography. Through his systematic mapping of both the ancient and modern worlds, he contributed significantly to the popularization of geographical science in France.
