Beskrivning
"Ponte Palatino e sbocco della Cloaca Massima" depicts a detailed view of the Tiber River in Rome, featuring the ancient circular Temple of Hercules Victor on the left bank and the arched mouth of the Cloaca Maxima. The composition highlights the monumental Roman infrastructure with the medieval bell tower of Santa Maria in Cosmedin rising in the background. In the foreground, a small boat with two figures navigates the river near the massive stone foundations of the Palatine Bridge. This etching was published in Rome as part of the series Nuova Raccolta delle Migliori Vedute Antiche e Moderne di Roma in 1798. It serves as a topographical record of the city's archaeological sites during the late eighteenth century.
Giovanni Domenico Cassini was an Italian-born astronomer and engineer who became a central figure in the scientific community of seventeenth-century France as the first director of the Paris Observatory. He is primarily known for his celestial discoveries, including the division in Saturn's rings and several of the planet's moons. In addition to his astronomical work, he applied rigorous mathematical methods to geodesy and cartography, laying the foundation for high-precision topographical mapping. His legacy continued through his descendants, who completed the first comprehensive geometric map of France.
