Bilder Giovanni Domenico Cassini (1625–1712) – View of the Milvian Bridge – Italy – Etching (1798)
Beskrivning
"Ponte Milvio oggi Molle" depicts the historic stone bridge crossing the Tiber River in Rome, featuring its multiple arches and a prominent defensive tower at the right bank. The composition includes small figures of fishermen and travelers along the riverbanks, with the distant dome of St. Peter's Basilica visible on the horizon under a wide sky. This etching was published in Rome as part of the series Nuova Raccolta delle Migliori Vedute Antiche e Moderne di Roma in 1798. It serves as a topographical record of a site famous for the battle between Constantine and Maxentius, rendered with the architectural precision characteristic of the period.
Giovanni Domenico Cassini was an Italian-born astronomer and engineer who became a central figure in the scientific community of seventeenth-century France as the first director of the Paris Observatory. He is primarily known for his celestial discoveries, including the division in Saturn's rings and several of the planet's moons. In addition to his astronomical work, he applied rigorous mathematical methods to geodesy and cartography, laying the foundation for high-precision topographical mapping. His legacy continued through his descendants, who completed the first comprehensive geometric map of France.
