Bilder Giovanni Domenico Cassini (1625–1712) – View of the Basilica of Saints John and Paul – Italy – Etching (1798)
Beskrivning
"Chiesa de' SS. Gio. e Paolo e Casa de' PP. Passionisti" depicts the architectural complex on the Caelian Hill in Rome, featuring the prominent curved apse of the basilica and the adjacent religious house. The composition includes a walled path in the foreground with figures, leading toward an arched gateway under a cloudy sky. This etching is part of the series Nuova Raccolta delle Migliori Vedute Antiche e Moderne di Roma, published in Rome in 1798. The work captures the historical layering of the site, where medieval and eighteenth-century structures sit upon the foundations of the ancient Temple of Claudius.
Giovanni Domenico Cassini was an Italian-born astronomer and engineer who became a central figure in the scientific community of seventeenth-century France as the first director of the Paris Observatory. He is primarily known for his celestial discoveries, including the division in Saturn's rings and several of the planet's moons. In addition to his astronomical work, he applied rigorous mathematical methods to geodesy and cartography, laying the foundation for high-precision topographical mapping. His legacy continued through his descendants, who completed the first comprehensive geometric map of France.
