"Tempj di Vesta e della Fortuna Virile" depicts the ancient Roman temples located in the Forum Boarium. The central focus is the circular Temple of Hercules Victor (historically identified as the Temple of Vesta), characterized by its surviving Corinthian columns and conical roof. To the right, the rectangular Temple of Portunus (formerly known as Fortuna Virilis) is visible, with a figure leading an ox-drawn cart in the foreground. This etching was published in Rome as part of the series Nuova Raccolta delle Migliori Vedute Antiche e Moderne di Roma. The work serves as a precise topographical record of the architectural heritage of Rome during the late eighteenth century.
Giovanni Domenico Cassini was an Italian engraver and draughtsman active in Rome during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. He specialized in architectural and topographical views, contributing significantly to the documentation of Rome's ancient and modern landmarks for travelers and scholars. Cassini was a contemporary of Giovanni Battista Piranesi and worked within a similar tradition of meticulously detailed and atmospheric etchings. His publications were instrumental in the dissemination of Roman architectural imagery throughout Europe during the era of the Grand Tour. Through his technical mastery of the etched line, he captured the enduring grandeur and character of the Eternal City.
