Beskrivning

"Sol. Gold. Aurum: Metallorum Rex" depicts a crowned king standing in a regalia robe, accompanied by a lion at his side. The central figure represents the personification of Gold, often equated with the Sun in alchemical tradition, as indicated by the title labeling it the "King of Metals." The woodcut is set amidst columns of German text titled "Tinctura Jovis" and "Bezoardicum Joviale," following the established layout of sixteenth-century editions of Paracelsus's scientific and philosophical treatises. This work originates from the Mineralogia series, likely published in central Europe, which illustrates the symbolic and medicinal relationships between planetary bodies and terrestrial elements.

Theophrastus von Hohenheim, commonly known as Paracelsus, was a Swiss physician and alchemist who fundamentally altered the course of Renaissance medicine. He is celebrated for his rejection of ancient medical dogmas in favor of chemical therapeutics and direct clinical observation. Paracelsus proposed that the universe and the human body were governed by chemical laws, leading to his pioneering work in toxicology and the use of inorganic substances as cures. His writings blended empirical science with spiritual philosophy, significantly influencing the development of modern chemistry and pharmacology during the early modern period.
