Matthaeus Merian was a highly influential Swiss-born engraver and publisher active in Frankfurt, widely recognized for his precision in topographical and scientific illustration. He managed a prolific workshop that produced some of the most significant illustrated volumes of the early modern era, including extensive city views and natural history compendiums. Merian's technical skill in copperplate engraving established him as one of the most significant illustrators of the seventeenth century.
