This engraving depicts the biblical scene from the Book of Genesis where Joseph stands before Pharaoh to interpret the ruler's dreams, leading to his appointment as a high official in Egypt. The composition shows Joseph gesturing toward Pharaoh, who sits upon a throne, surrounded by a large courtly assembly and soldiers within an architectural setting.
Pieter Hendriksz. Schut was a Dutch Golden Age artist and engraver active in Amsterdam, recognized for his extensive production of biblical and topographical prints. He worked closely with the publisher Claes Jansz. Visscher, creating detailed narrative series that were widely used to illustrate seventeenth-century bibles and religious texts.
