This illustration depicts the biblical narrative from the Book of Samuel in which Abigail meets David to offer food and appease his anger toward her husband, Nabal. The scene shows Abigail kneeling before David and his soldiers, with various baskets of provisions placed on the ground between them.
Pieter Hendriksz. Schut was a Dutch Golden Age engraver and artist based in Amsterdam, highly regarded for his extensive series of biblical and topographical illustrations. He collaborated frequently with the prominent publisher Claes Jansz. Visscher, and his clear, detailed style made his prints a staple for seventeenth-century illustrated bibles.
