This illustration depicts the biblical narrative from the Book of Samuel in which the wealthy Nabal refuses to provide provisions to the messengers sent by David. The scene is composed with Nabal seated under a tree in the foreground while the messengers approach him, set against a backdrop featuring a large manor house and a well.
Pieter Hendriksz. Schut was a Dutch Golden Age engraver and artist based in Amsterdam, highly regarded for his extensive series of biblical and topographical illustrations. He collaborated frequently with the prominent publisher Claes Jansz. Visscher, and his clear, detailed style made his prints a staple for seventeenth-century illustrated bibles.
