This color offset print reproduces a scene modeled after ancient Greek black-figure vase painting. The composition depicts a dramatic confrontation or pursuit involving a large male figure in a fantastical helmet, a female figure, and two smaller male figures running amidst decorative palmettes and stylized foliage. The image maintains the terracotta background color and black silhouette characteristic of Attic pottery.
Benedict Piringer was an Austrian engraver and landscape painter, best known for his detailed topographical etchings and aquatints in the early 19th century. This print is a later reproduction of an illustration or engraving he produced depicting classical antiquity.
