Bilder Sebastiano Serlio (1475–1554) – Pantheon Portico and Roman Ruins – woodcut
Beskrivning
This architectural illustration depicts the majestic portico of the Pantheon in Rome, showcasing a rhythmic row of Corinthian columns supporting a classic triangular pediment. Behind the intact structure, Serlio includes a study of adjacent Roman ruins, specifically a crumbling brick tower, to provide historical and spatial context. The Latin text above, beginning with "Quamvis praesentis aedificij," offers a scholarly analysis of the building’s preservation and proportions, noting that while much of the original edifice remained, certain modules and ornaments required theoretical reconstruction. This plate was published in a 1569 edition of Tutte l'opere d'architettura et prospettiva, the seminal work that first provided architects with a visual, illustrated system for understanding and recreating classical Roman majesty.
Sebastiano Serlio was a revolutionary Italian architect and theorist whose residency at the French court of Fontainebleau allowed him to bridge the gap between Italian Renaissance ideals and broader European building practices.
