Beskrivning

This early copperplate engraving depicts the Danish military camp near Middelfart (Mittelvarsundt), on the island of Funen, during the Torstenson War. The Swedish forces captured this position in 1644. The map shows fortifications, tent formations, batteries, and the coastline across the Little Belt. The engraving was published in Theatrum Europaeum, Volume V, a major historical chronicle of European events issued by Matthäus Merian in Frankfurt.

Matthäus Merian (1593–1650) was a Swiss-born engraver and publisher based in Frankfurt, renowned for his topographic views, historical prints, and monumental illustrated chronicle Theatrum Europaeum. His press became one of the most influential visual historical sources in 17th-century Europe, combining detailed copper engravings with contemporary narrative accounts. This plate was engraved by C. Mardefeldt.
