"Chirurgie" illustrates several types of orthopedic devices designed for the immobilization and correction of lower limb injuries. The plate features a leg secured within a large padded box splint held by ties, various leather and metal braces with buckles for the calf and foot, and a mechanical wooden post with a lever used for limb traction. This engraving is part of the Surgery section of the monumental Encyclopédie, ou Dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers. The work was published in Paris under the direction of Denis Diderot and Jean le Rond d'Alembert. This publication provided the most exhaustive visual record of Enlightenment-era medical technology and orthopedic practices.
Robert Benard was a prolific French engraver specifically renowned for his technical contributions to the major encyclopedic projects of the eighteenth century. He operated a large workshop in Paris and was the director of the engraving department for the Académie des Sciences. Benard is most famous for supervising and executing thousands of copperplates for Diderot's Encyclopédie, ensuring a high level of consistency and detail across various scientific and medical subjects. His work was essential in providing clear, visual explanations for complex surgical procedures and professional tools during the Age of Reason.
