"The Monkey" (from the La Comédie Humaine suite) features a theatrical and whimsical scene rendered in expressive washes of grey, blue, and ochre. The composition depicts a seated woman in a blue bodice and hat holding a small monkey, which in turn reaches for an apple held aloft. To the left, a rotund, mask-like figure observes the interaction with a mischievous expression.
This work, dated "26.1.54" in the plate, belongs to a series of drawings Picasso executed in Vallauris during a period of intense reflection on the relationship between the artist, the model, and the performative nature of life.
