Bilder Dirck Stoop (1610–1686) – Man Holding a Horse by the Bridle – Etching (1651)
Beskrivning
"Man Holding a Horse by the Bridle" depicts a rural scene featuring a man in a wide-brimmed hat standing beside a horse and a dog. In the background, another figure is shown mounted on a horse, while a third person rests on the ground, all set against an open, minimalist landscape. This etching is part of a series of twelve prints titled Various Horses, which was published in Utrecht in 1651. The work exemplifies the Dutch interest in equine subjects and the everyday activities of the cavalry and country folk during the seventeenth century.
Dirck Stoop was a Dutch Golden Age painter and engraver born in Utrecht who specialized in landscapes, battle scenes, and equestrian portraits. He spent several years traveling through Italy, which influenced his use of light and the inclusion of southern European atmospheric qualities in his topographical works. Stoop eventually served as a court painter in Lisbon and later in London, where he documented major royal events and aristocratic life. His technical skill in etching is particularly noted for the precise rendering of animal anatomy and the expressive textures of the natural environment.
