Bilder Girolamo Ruscelli (c. 1500-1566) – Frontispiece of Sine Fine – Engraving (1566)
Beskrivning
"Sine Fine" depicts a grand architectural frontispiece featuring a monarch enthroned and receiving a kneeling figure, framed by columns and classical statuary. In the upper register, putti and celestial figures inhabit the clouds, and the Latin phrase "Sine Fine" is prominently displayed in a central banner. This copperplate engraving serves as a decorative opening plate or allegorical illustration. It originates from a Venetian work on historical symbolism and heraldry.
Girolamo Ruscelli was a prominent Italian polymath, cartographer, and editor active in Venice during the Renaissance. He is best known for his influential writings on literary theory, language, and heraldry, as well as his significant revisions and commentaries on Ptolemy’s Geography. His intellectual contributions spanned across humanism, science, and the decorative arts, making him a central figure in Venetian cultural life. Ruscelli’s work bridged classical scholarship with the contemporary interests of the sixteenth-century elite.
