"Cavaliers Germain, Maure, et Numide" displays three scenes of mounted figures from ancient military history. The engraving features soldiers on horseback representing different cavalry traditions. Bernard de Montfaucon was a French Benedictine monk and a pioneering figure in the fields of paleography and archaeology. He is best known for his monumental work, L'Antiquité expliquée et représentée en figures, which aimed to catalog and illustrate classical antiquities through an exhaustive series of engravings. His scholarship was instrumental in the eighteenth century, providing a systematic visual guide to the ancient world that influenced the development of archaeology and art history.
