"De Aegüptische Koning OSIRIS onderwijst zijn volk in den landbouw." The engraving depicts the Egyptian king Osiris teaching a farmer how to plow the earth, with a pyramid visible in the background and a bull nearby. This is a copperplate engraving. It is an allegorical illustration of the myth in which Osiris introduces agriculture to his people, symbolizing the civilizing influence of the deity.
Reinier Vinkeles was a Dutch draughtsman and engraver. He was active in Amsterdam and is recognized for his prolific output of prints, portraits, and book illustrations. His work often captured historical, mythological, and genre scenes, reflecting the artistic traditions of the 18th and early 19th centuries. He trained in Amsterdam and later studied in Paris, which influenced his refined technique.
