"Excelsa in Barrum Draco sese ex arbore iactat." This engraving depicts a dramatic struggle between a large dragon and an elephant within a dense landscape. The dragon drops from a tree to ensnare the elephant, while another elephant wanders in the background. The work is part of the series Venationes Ferarum, Avium, Piscium, which documents various hunting scenes and exotic animal encounters.
Johannes Stradanus was a Flemish artist who spent the majority of his career in Florence, Italy, working under the patronage of the Medici family. He was a prominent figure in the late Mannerist style, known for his intricate designs for tapestries and extensive series of engravings. His work frequently explored themes of hunting, natural history, and mythology with a focus on dynamic movement and narrative detail. He served as a bridge between Northern European artistic traditions and the Italian Renaissance aesthetic.
