The engraving depicts an intense spectacle in a classical arena where a powerful lion engages a large dog in combat while an elephant lies defeated on the floor. Spectators watch the event from a gallery above the enclosure. This work belongs to the series Venationes Ferarum, Avium, Piscium, which illustrates various hunting scenes and exotic animal displays. The scene reflects late sixteenth-century depictions of ancient animal fighting exhibitions.
Johannes Stradanus was a Flemish artist who spent the majority of his career in Florence, Italy, working under the patronage of the Medici family. He was a prominent figure in the late Mannerist style, known for his intricate designs for tapestries and extensive series of engravings. His work frequently explored themes of hunting, natural history, and mythology with a focus on dynamic movement and narrative detail. He served as a bridge between Northern European artistic traditions and the Italian Renaissance aesthetic.
