Beskrivning

"Marbrerie, Plan du Pavé du Val de Grace". This large-format architectural engraving provides a detailed top-down view of the intricate marble pavement design within the Church of Val-de-Grâce in Paris. The plan illustrates the complex geometric patterns, including elaborate rosettes in the side chapels and the swirling, radial mosaic directly beneath the Great Dome. The transition between the rectangular nave and the circular crossing is meticulously documented, showing the masterful use of polychrome marble to enhance the sacred space.
This plate belongs to the "Marbrerie" (Marble Working) section of the Encyclopédie, ou Dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers, edited by Denis Diderot. The inclusion of this specific pavement serves as a premier example of French Baroque craftsmanship and the technical skill required to cut and set large-scale stone patterns. Robert Benard oversaw the engraving of this plate, ensuring that the mathematical precision of the original architectural design was translated clearly for the Enlightenment reader.

Robert Benard was a French engraver who specialized in technical and scientific illustration during the eighteenth century. He served as the primary engraver for the Académie Royale des Sciences and the director of the engraving department for Diderot's Encyclopédie. His body of work is characterized by a precise and methodical linear style that was ideally suited for documenting complex mechanical trades, natural history specimens, and architectural designs. Benard is credited with overseeing the production of over two thousand plates that contributed to the global dissemination of French Enlightenment knowledge.
