Bilder Antoine Charles Vauthier (1790–after 1831) – Study of Striped and Spotted Hyenas – Hand-coloured engraving (1830)
Beskrivning
"La Hyène rayée. La Hyène tachetée." This nineteenth-century hand-coloured engraving provides a comparative zoological study of two hyena species. The upper register depicts a striped hyena, characterized by its vertical dark stripes and prominent dorsal mane. The lower register illustrates a spotted hyena, showing its more robust build and mottled coat pattern. Both animals are shown in profile against stylized landscape backgrounds. This plate was published in Paris as part of a later edition of the monumental Histoire Naturelle by the Comte de Buffon, updated with new illustrations by contemporary artists to reflect evolving scientific knowledge.
Antoine Charles Vauthier was a French natural history painter and engraver active during the early nineteenth century. He was highly regarded for his technical precision and his ability to render the textures of fur and plumage with great accuracy. Vauthier contributed extensively to the major scientific publications of his era, including the works of Cuvier and the Dictionnaire classique d'histoire naturelle. His illustrations were instrumental in bridging the gap between Enlightenment-era taxonomy and the more rigorous biological observations of the Victorian period.
