Bilder Antoine Charles Vauthier (1790–after 1831) – Study of a Lion, Lioness, and Tiger – Hand-coloured engraving (1830)
Beskrivning
"Le Lion. La Lionne. Le Tigre." This hand-coloured engraving provides a comparative study of the primary large cat species. The upper register illustrates a male lion standing in profile, featuring a full, dark mane and tufted tail. The middle register depicts a lioness in a walking pose, showing the absence of a mane and a more slender build. The lower register presents a tiger, meticulously detailing the characteristic vertical stripe pattern and powerful limb structure. This plate was published in Paris as part of a later edition of the monumental Histoire Naturelle by the Comte de Buffon, updated with illustrations by Vauthier to meet the scientific standards of the early nineteenth century.
Antoine Charles Vauthier was a French natural history painter and engraver active during the early nineteenth century. He was highly regarded for his technical precision and his ability to render organic textures like fur and musculature with great detail. Vauthier contributed extensively to major scientific publications of his era, including works by Cuvier and the Dictionnaire classique d'histoire naturelle. His illustrations were significant for transitioning Enlightenment-era natural history into the more rigorous biological documentation of the Victorian period.
