Bilder Antoine Charles Vauthier (1790–after 1831) – Study of an Elephant, Rhinoceros, and Camel – Hand-coloured engraving (1830)
Beskrivning
"L'Elephant. Le Rhinoceros. Le Chameau." The upper register depicts an elephant in profile, detailing its tusks, trunk, and large ears. The middle register illustrates a rhinoceros, specifically highlighting the armored appearance of its skin folds and its prominent nasal horn. The lower register presents a Bactrian camel with two humps, standing in a desert landscape featuring small pyramids and palm trees in the background. This hand-coloured engraving was published in Paris as part of a later edition of the natural history works by Comte de Buffon. The plate reflects the early nineteenth-century effort to provide scientifically accurate visual representations of exotic megafauna for a general audience.
