This engraving, Plate 18, is a portrait depicting a bearded man from the island of Mangea (Mangaia, Cook Islands), shown with a distinctive topknot hairstyle and resting his head on his hand. The image was engraved for publication in the official account of Captain Cook's third voyage to the Pacific Ocean, documenting the appearance and customs of the indigenous people encountered.

John Webber was an English artist known primarily for serving as the official artist on Captain James Cook’s third voyage (1776–1780). His detailed drawings documenting the customs, people, and landscapes of the newly explored Pacific regions were converted into influential folio engravings for the voyage's published account.
