Beskrivning

"Pavo" depicts three peacocks in various stances, showcasing both male and female plumage variations. This copperplate engraving is from the natural history volume Historiae Naturalis de Avibus, published by Matthäus Merian in Frankfurt in 1653. The work provides a systematic zoological record of these birds as documented in the seventeenth century.

Joannes Jonstonus was a Polish-Scottish physician, naturalist, and educator. He authored several comprehensive volumes on the natural world that combined classical knowledge with contemporary biological study. His encyclopedic works were widely circulated across European academic and scientific circles. His publications remain significant for their influence on early modern zoological illustration.
