Beskrivning
"Passiflora vitifolia" illustrates a flowering passion flower vine, featuring a large pink blossom in full bloom alongside a pendant bud and characteristic tendrils. This hand-coloured lithograph is from Curtis’s Botanical Magazine, published in London in 1868. The magazine is one of the oldest and most influential botanical periodicals in history, known for its commitment to documenting new and exotic plant species introduced to British horticulture from across the globe with high artistic and scientific fidelity.
Walter Hood Fitch was a Scottish botanical artist and the most prolific illustrator for Curtis’s Botanical Magazine, producing nearly 10,000 plates over several decades. He was the sole illustrator for the magazine for over 40 years, working closely with the directors of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Fitch was renowned for his ability to capture the complex three-dimensional structure of plants on a two-dimensional surface, a skill that made him a favorite of botanists like Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker. His technical mastery of lithography allowed for the mass dissemination of accurate botanical knowledge during the Victorian era.
