Bilder Walter Hood Fitch (1817–1892) – Trichopilia suavis (Sweet-scented Trichopilia) – Hand-coloured lithograph (1869)
Beskrivning
"Trichopilia suavis" illustrates an epiphytic orchid featuring large, pale pink blossoms with spotted labella, emerging from prominent, flattened green pseudobulbs. Above the main botanical study are two scientific diagrams detailing the internal structure of the flower's column and lip. This hand-coloured lithograph is from Curtis’s Botanical Magazine, published in London in 1869. The periodical served as a vital record for the influx of Central and South American orchid species being introduced to European conservatories during the mid-nineteenth century.
Walter Hood Fitch was a Scottish botanical artist and the most prolific illustrator for Curtis’s Botanical Magazine, producing nearly 10,000 plates over several decades. He was the sole illustrator for the magazine for over 40 years, working closely with the directors of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Fitch was renowned for his ability to capture the complex three-dimensional structure of plants on a two-dimensional surface, a skill that made him a favorite of botanists like Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker. His technical mastery of lithography allowed for the mass dissemination of accurate botanical knowledge during the Victorian era.
