This hand-coloured engraving is from the Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle, published in Paris in 1849. The work is widely considered one of the most significant and beautifully illustrated natural history encyclopedias of the nineteenth century, noted for the high artistic quality and scientific accuracy of its plates, which were often based on specimens in the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle.
Charles Dessalines d'Orbigny was a French naturalist and geologist who directed the compilation of the Dictionnaire Universel.
