"Horlogerie, Machine pour Arrondir les Dentures" This engraving illustrates a specialized mechanical tool used in clockmaking to refine and round the teeth of clock wheels. The technical nature is a copper engraving. It was produced for the Recueil de Planches, which accompanied the monumental Encyclopedie edited by Denis Diderot and Jean le Rond d Alembert, published in Paris. This publication was a landmark of the Enlightenment, aiming to document all human knowledge and technical processes of the era.

Robert Benard was a French engraver who directed the production of many technical illustrations for major eighteenth-century works. He is most famous for supervising the creation of the thousands of plates for the Encyclopedie of Diderot and d Alembert. His work provided clear visual representations of scientific and mechanical advancements of his time. He was highly regarded for his ability to translate complex machinery into detailed and accurate technical drawings.
