"Horlogerie, Machine pour Egalir les Roues de Rencontre" This technical plate depicts a specialized instrument used in watchmaking to ensure the precision and uniformity of escape wheels. The work is a copper engraving. It was published as part of the Recueil de Planches for the Encyclopedie, ou Dictionnaire Raisonne des Sciences, des Arts et des Metiers, edited by Denis Diderot and Jean le Rond d Alembert in Paris. This encyclopedic project was a cornerstone of the French Enlightenment, documenting the industrial and mechanical progress of the eighteenth century.

Robert Benard was a prolific French engraver who specialized in technical and scientific subjects. He served as the primary director for the engraving department of the Encyclopedie, managing the production of over two thousand plates. His career was defined by his meticulous attention to detail and his ability to communicate complex engineering concepts through art. Benard also contributed significant work to the descriptions of arts and crafts for the Academie Royale des Sciences.
