"Anas Melanotos" This print features a detailed study of the comb duck, also known as the knob-billed duck, shown in profile with its characteristic fleshy protuberance on the beak. The work is a hand-coloured etching. It was published in The Naturalist s Miscellany, a celebrated periodical dedicated to zoology and botany, which was published in London by George Shaw. This series was significant for providing early scientific descriptions and high-quality illustrations of many exotic species discovered during late eighteenth-century expeditions.

Frederick Polydore Nodder was a prominent British natural history artist and engraver active in London. He held the prestigious position of botanic painter to Queen Charlotte and was frequently employed by Joseph Banks to illustrate specimens from Captain Cook s voyages. His work is characterized by scientific precision and vibrant hand-colouring, contributing significantly to the documentation of global flora and fauna. Nodder's legacy is preserved through his extensive contributions to several major natural history publications of the Enlightenment era.
