"Pensilis e cauea Tigris rabiosa theatri" This dramatic scene depicts a leopard leaping from a wheeled wooden cage to attack an unarmed man in the center of an arena, while an audience of Roman citizens and soldiers watches from the galleries above. The work is a copper engraving. It was published in the series Venationes Ferarum, Avium, Piscium (Hunts of Wild Animals, Birds, and Fish), which was printed by Philips Galle in Antwerp. This influential series documented various historical and contemporary methods of animal combat and hunting, reflecting the Renaissance fascination with classical antiquity and exotic creatures.

Jan van der Straet, also known as Stradanus, was a Flemish artist who established a successful career in Florence under the patronage of the Medici. He was a prolific designer of prints, tapestries, and paintings, frequently collaborating with master engravers in Antwerp to publish his designs. His work is characterized by a blend of Northern European realism and Italian Mannerist composition. Stradanus played a pivotal role in the dissemination of scientific and historical imagery during the late sixteenth century.
