"Incautus Anglus tenebrosa nocte Volucres" This scene illustrates a nocturnal bird-hunting technique where hunters use torches and fire to daze and attract birds in the trees, while others use sticks and nets to capture the disoriented prey. The work is a copper engraving. It was published in the series Venationes Ferarum, Avium, Piscium (Hunts of Wild Animals, Birds, and Fish), which was printed by Philips Galle in Antwerp. This series served as an extensive visual encyclopedia of various hunting, fishing, and fowling methods practiced across different cultures during the late Renaissance.
Jan van der Straet, also known as Stradanus, was a Flemish artist who established himself in Florence under the patronage of the Medici. He was a prolific designer of prints and tapestries, frequently collaborating with master engravers in Antwerp to publish his designs. His work is characterized by a blend of Northern European realism and Italian Mannerist composition. Stradanus played a pivotal role in the dissemination of scientific and historical imagery during the late sixteenth century.
