"Et postquam venerunt in locum qui vocatur Calvariae, ibi crucifixerunt eum" This dramatic scene depicts Christ being nailed to the cross by several executioners, surrounded by soldiers on horseback and foot, with the city of Jerusalem visible in the distant background. The technical nature is a copper engraving. It was published as part of a biblical series, likely the Thesaurus Sacrarum Historiarum Veteris et Novi Testamenti, which was printed in Antwerp. This publication was a major collaborative effort among the city's leading artists and engravers to provide a comprehensive visual narrative of the scriptures during the late sixteenth century.

Marten de Vos was a leading Flemish painter and draughtsman who became one of the most influential artists in Antwerp after the death of Frans Floris. He traveled to Italy, where he was influenced by the Venetian school, before returning to his homeland to establish a prolific workshop. He was a founding member of the Guild of Romanists and served as a primary designer for the major publishing houses of the Plantin Press and Gerard de Jode. His elegant and clear compositions played a vital role in the development of Northern Mannerism and the visual language of the Counter-Reformation.
