"Susceperunt autem Iesum et eduxerunt. Et baiulans sibi crucem, exiuit in eum qui dicitur Caluariae locum." This scene depicts Christ falling under the weight of the cross while being led through the gates of Jerusalem, with Saint Veronica kneeling to offer him her veil. The technical nature is a copper engraving. It was published in the Thesaurus Sacrarum Historiarum Veteris et Novi Testamenti, printed in Antwerp by Gerard de Jode. This influential series of biblical illustrations brought together the finest Flemish artists and engravers of the sixteenth century to visualize the narrative of the Old and New Testaments.

Marten de Vos was a preeminent Flemish painter and draughtsman whose work defined the artistic landscape of Antwerp during the late Renaissance. Following a period of study in Italy, he returned to the Low Countries where he established a prolific workshop and became a favorite designer for major publishing houses. His elegant compositions and clear, expressive figures were instrumental in the development of Northern Mannerism. As a leading figure of the Counter-Reformation in art, he produced a vast body of religious imagery that circulated widely throughout Europe and the Spanish colonies.
