Bilder Marten de Vos (1532-1603) – View of the Mocking of Christ – Engraving (1585)
Beskrivning
"Plectentes coronam de spinis posuerunt super caput eius, et arundinem in dextera eius. Et genu flexo ante eum, illudebant ei." This scene illustrates Christ being mocked by Roman soldiers, who have placed a crown of thorns upon his head and a reed in his hand, while kneeling before him. The technical nature is a copper engraving. It was published in the Thesaurus Sacrarum Historiarum Veteris et Novi Testamenti, printed in Antwerp by Gerard de Jode. This series of biblical illustrations was a collaborative effort of Flemish artists and engravers of the sixteenth century to visualize the scriptures.
Marten de Vos was a preeminent Flemish painter and draughtsman who became one of the most influential artists in Antwerp. Following a period of study in Italy, where he was influenced by the Venetian school, he returned to his homeland to establish a prolific workshop. He was a founding member of the Guild of Romanists and served as a primary designer for major publishing houses. His clear compositions were instrumental in the development of Northern Mannerism and the visual language of the Counter-Reformation.
