Bilder Johann Michael Seligmann (1720–1762) – View of an American Robin – Hand-coloured etching (1749)
Beskrivning
"Der Americanische Krametsvogel, Turdus Americanus minor, La petite Grive d'Amerique" This plate illustrates an American robin perched on a rocky outcrop with a landscape of trees in the background, featuring its characteristic dark plumage and reddish-orange breast. The technical nature is a hand-coloured etching. It was published in the Sammlung verschiedener ausländischer und seltener Vögel, printed in Nuremberg. This work is significant as it compiled and re-engraved the important ornithological discoveries of Mark Catesby and George Edwards, making these rare New World species accessible to a continental European audience during the mid-eighteenth century.
Johann Michael Seligmann was a German engraver and art dealer based in Nuremberg, a major center for scientific publishing. He was highly regarded for his skill in copperplate engraving, particularly in the field of natural history where he collaborated with eminent botanists and zoologists. His primary contribution was the production of large-scale, multi-volume works that translated and expanded upon the findings of English and French naturalists.
