Bilder Marcus Elieser Bloch (1723–1799) – View of the Male Salmon – Engraving (1806)
Beskrivning
"The Male Salmon" This plate illustrates a male salmon shown in profile, featuring its characteristic spotted skin, streamlined body, and the distinctively hooked lower jaw known as a kype. The technical nature is a copper engraving. It was published in a British natural history series, printed in London and based on the earlier monumental work of Marcus Elieser Bloch. This publication is significant for its anatomical precision, reflecting the eighteenth-century transition toward empirical observation and the systematic classification of fish species found in European and Atlantic waters.
Marcus Elieser Bloch was a German Jewish physician and naturalist who is considered one of the most important ichthyologists in history. He practiced medicine in Berlin while assembling a massive private collection of fish specimens from around the world. His primary contribution was the multi-volume Allgemeine Naturgeschichte der Fische, which set a new global standard for the visual and textual documentation of marine life. Bloch's work was widely translated and re-engraved throughout Europe, serving as the foundational reference for the study of fish for several decades following its initial publication.
