Beskrivning

"Alexandri Magni Imperium et Expeditiones." This map illustrates the vast territories conquered by Alexander the Great, extending from Greece and Egypt in the west to the Indus River in the east, with green hand-coloured borders delineating the various provinces and regions. The technical nature is a hand-coloured copper engraving. It was published in an atlas by Charles Delamarche, printed in Paris, and represents a nineteenth-century reissue of the foundational cartographic work of Guillaume Delisle. This map is significant for its historical and geographical accuracy, serving as a primary academic reference for understanding the classical world and the spread of Hellenistic influence across Asia and North Africa.

Guillaume Delisle was a premier French cartographer who revolutionized the field through his commitment to scientific accuracy and the use of astronomical observations to determine coordinates. He was appointed as the first Premier Géographe du Roi and was a member of the Académie Royale des Sciences. His primary contribution was the creation of a new standard for mapmaking that abandoned the decorative fantasies of earlier eras in favor of empirical data. Delisle's maps were highly influential across Europe, forming the basis for subsequent geographical studies and atlas publications for over a century after his death.
