"Carte Generale de l'Asie." This map illustrates the continent of Asia, extending from the Mediterranean Sea to the Pacific Ocean, and including the northern coast of Australia then referred to as Nouvelle Hollande. The technical nature is a hand-coloured engraving published in Paris by J.P. Delaval.
Edme Mentelle was a prominent French geographer and historian who held several prestigious positions, including professor at the École Normale and member of the Institut de France. He was a prolific author of educational geographical texts and atlases, often collaborating with the cartographer Pierre-Gilles Chanlaire. His primary contribution was the modernization of geographical education in France, producing clear, accurate, and accessible maps that integrated historical context with contemporary political reality. Mentelle’s work was widely respected for its systematic approach and served as a standard reference for French diplomacy and academic study throughout the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
