This map illustrates the southern peninsula of Italy alongside the major islands of Sicily and Sardinia, with the coast of North Africa visible in the lower left. The technical nature is a copper engraving published in Paris as part of a larger geographical or historical series. 

Pierre Francois Tardieu was a member of a prolific French family of engravers and was renowned for his technical skill in executing complex maps and architectural plates. He worked closely with leading geographers of the Enlightenment to produce highly detailed topographical works that were prized for their clarity and scientific accuracy. His contributions helped define the high standard of French cartographic engraving during the mid-eighteenth century.
