"Mappa fluxus et refluxus rationes in Isthmo Americae in freto Magellanico, caeteraque Americae litoribus exhibens." This map illustrates North and South America with a primary focus on oceanic currents and tides, featuring swirling patterns in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans to represent marine circulation. The technical nature is a copper engraving published in Amsterdam by Janssonius van Waesberge and Elizaeus Weyerstraten as part of the influential work Mundus Subterraneus. Athanasius Kircher was a German Jesuit scholar and polymath who published around forty major works on subjects ranging from oriental studies and geology to medicine and music. He was celebrated as one of the most intellectually curious figures of the seventeenth century and founded the Musaeum Kircherianum in Rome. 

Athanasius Kircher was a German Jesuit priest and a prolific polymath who became a central figure in the scientific life of Baroque Rome. He spent most of his career at the Roman College where he conducted extensive research into the natural sciences, linguistics, and archaeology. His primary contribution was the synthesis of vast amounts of global knowledge into encyclopedic volumes that combined observation with speculative theory.
