This map illustrates North and South America with a primary focus on oceanic currents and tides, featuring swirling patterns in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans to represent marine circulation. The technical nature is a copper engraving published in Amsterdam by Janssonius van Waesberge and Elizaeus Weyerstraten as part of the influential work Mundus Subterraneus. Athanasius Kircher was a German Jesuit scholar and polymath who published around forty major works on subjects ranging from oriental studies and geology to medicine and music. He was celebrated as one of the most intellectually curious figures of the seventeenth century and founded the Musaeum Kircherianum in Rome.
