Beskrivning
"LE MEY-DOUN." This engraving illustrates the Great Square, or Naqsh-e Jahan, in Isfahan, featuring the bustling marketplace with tents, figures on horseback, and the prominent architectural landmarks including the Ali Qapu Palace and the dome of a mosque. The technical nature is a copper engraving published in Delft by Reiner Boitet as part of the work Reizen over Moskovie, door Persie en Indie. Cornelis de Bruyn was a Dutch artist and traveler who spent decades exploring the Middle East and Russia, meticulously documenting the landscapes, costumes, and cityscapes he encountered. He was celebrated for his commitment to visual accuracy, often spending months in a single location to ensure his sketches were representative of the actual site. His primary contribution was the publication of richly illustrated travelogues that provided European audiences with their most detailed and reliable views of the Safavid Empire and the Russian interior during the early eighteenth century.
Cornelis de Bruyn was a Dutch painter, traveler, and author who bridged the worlds of art and early ethnography. After training as a painter in the Netherlands and Italy, he embarked on two major voyages that took him through the Levant, Egypt, Persia, and Southeast Asia. His primary contribution was the elevation of travel illustration to a high level of documentary realism, as he prioritized sketching from life over the imaginative exaggerations common in earlier travel literature. De Bruyn's works were translated into several languages and became essential references for scholars and naturalists interested in the topography and culture of the East. His meticulous depictions of archeological sites like Persepolis remain valuable to modern historians for their detail and early date.
